The Children's Emotional HealthLink (CEHL) is dedicated to helping parents, pediatricians, and other providers improve the emotional health of children and families. CEHL provides information designed to empower parents and to assist pediatricians to reach out to children and families in need.

CEHL Receives Award from The National Academies of Practice

CEHL was awarded the National Academies of Practice (NAP) 2013 Interdisciplinary Group Recognition Award. This prestigious award is given annually to a group that has made enduring contributions to interdisciplinary practice and education. The Award was presented to CEHL’s Leadership Team: Howard S. King, MD, MPH, Elizabeth A. Rider MSW, MD, Julia Swartz, MSW, LICSW, CEIS, and David Robinson, EdD.

Founded in 1981, the National Academies of Practice (NAP) serves as a distinguished interprofessional policy forum that advises United States governmental organizations and policy makers on approaches in healthcare. NAP is comprised of distinguished, elected members of 14 healthcare Academies.

CEHL Partners with International Charter for Human Values in Healthcare

charterCEHL is pleased to announce that it is a Partner of the International Charter for Human Values in Healthcare. The Charter is an international, interprofessional collaborative effort to restore the primacy of human values necessary for practicing compassionate, ethical, and safe healthcare around the world. Created in early 2011, the Charter is a major initiative of the International Research Centre for Communication in Healthcare at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and University of Technology Sydney, Australia.

Mastering Pediatric Care in the Age of Healthcare Reform: Thriving in a Patient-Centered Model 

An open letter to potential participants

Dear colleague:

We invite pediatricians, family practitioners, medical-pediatric physicians and pediatric nurse practitioners to participate in an educational program “Mastering Pediatric Care in the Age of Healthcare Reform: Thriving in a Patient-Centered Model.” Our goal is to enhance pediatric practitioners' confidence in providing psychosocial assessment, management, and referral for children and families.

This is the fourth year we have offered the program, and most past participants have found it very useful; some have found it transformative. For each monthly meeting, we invite an expert to discuss topics related to psychosocial pediatrics. Topics will include: utilizing reflective listening and empathic interviewing skills; understanding the role of family systems; the diagnosis and management of childhood depression; the art of the therapy referral; professional boundaries, and other issues specifically related to building a comprehensive psychosocial skill base. "…Increasingly, it is falling to pediatricians and family practitioners to cope with the tide of pediatric mental-health issues; …pediatricians are often ill-prepared to provide such care, and fear they won't be reimbursed… The key is going to be getting pediatricians in general more comfortable with the role of talking to families and children about mental-health issues; parents actually welcome such intervention, and one aim of [the Children's Emotional Health Link] training program is to teach pediatricians to gain the confidence of parents, and encourage follow-up visits for open discussions of family problems which may be affecting their child."
