Newton-Wellesley Hospital

Children’s Emotional HealthLink is supported in part by Newton-Wellesley Hospital, a comprehensive medical center affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and the Partners HealthCare Network, and located in Newton, Massachusetts. The hospital was founded in 1881 by a group of concerned citizens who felt their community should have access to local hospital care. The Cottage Hospital system was based on the British theory that country residents would be more likely to accept care in smaller hospitals built as cottages in each community.

Founded in 1881, Newton-Wellesley Hospital (NWH) is committed to providing care for children and adolescents in all areas of health, including their emotional development. During its long history, NWH has continually expanded its services for children. In 2003, the hospital opened a Pediatric Emergency Center and new Pediatric Ambulatory Care Center. MassGeneral Hospital for Children, established in 2002, offers subspecialty pediatric care in a variety of areas that include psychiatry, neurosurgery, allergy, gastroenterology, speech and language and many others. Michael Jellinek, MD was President of Newton-Wellesley Hospital and Chief of the Child Psychiatry Service at Massachusetts General Hospital for many years. In July 2012, Dr. Jellinek stepped down as NWH President to focus on his responsibilities as Chief of Clinical Affairs at Partners HealthCare System.

Newton-Wellesley is a major teaching hospital for Tufts University School of Medicine, and also has established postgraduate training programs for Harvard Medical School residents. It is Boston's western suburbs' most comprehensive medical center. In 2004, Newton-Wellesley was named by Solucient as one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals that has achieved a level of excellence in quality of care, efficiency of operations, financial performance and adaptation to the changing healthcare environment. The Hospital was also named in the Boston Business Journal's 2012 Best Places to Work  list. The Boston Globe listed it as one of the "Top Places to Work 2011" and "Top Places to Work 2010"

Since 1999, Newton-Wellesley Hospital has been a member of Partners HealthCare, a network founded by Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Newton-Wellesley meets the health care needs of hundreds of thousands of people in its community annually. Newton-Wellesley covers medicine, surgery, pediatrics, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, and many other specialties.
